Facebook may add pay wall for certain news content

Facebook to test subscription news service -- with paywall

According to new reports, Facebook is planning to implement a subscription service that essentially allows publishers to put a paywall in front of their articles on the platform.

This is similar to a paywall with initial free access now in place with media organizations, including The New York Times and The Washington Post.

Brown said at a conference in New York Tuesday that news organizations have been calling for subscription capabilities. The initial pitch was that this would make it easier for Facebook users to consume faster-loading news stories, and thus get publishers access to much bigger audiences.

Social Networking site, Facebook has unveiled its plans to launch a news subscription product.

If you aren't familiar with the paywall idea, it is based on metered and premium plans. Initial tests are set to begin this October, and the news subscription service will expand in 2018 if all goes to plan.

However, publishers have long criticized that they haven't been able to monetize Instant Articles to the same degree as content hosted on their own sites.

"And that is something we are doing now". Facebook is also testing mid-roll video ads with a handful of publishers that it plans to eventually roll out to everyone.

In a separate statement, Brown says Facebook is in early talks with publishers on "how we might better support subscription business models".

News on Facebook may soon cost you.

Facebook hasn't disclosed how payments will be handled and if the company will take a cut of subscription sales.

Only last week, some of the world's leading news organisations including the Associated Press, New York Times and Wall Street Journal, along with thousands of other news publishers joined forces under the News Media Alliance trade organisation to petition Congress over claims that publishers are unfairly compensated from Facebook and Google for publishing news content. According to media reports, Google and Facebook control almost two-third of the digital advertising industry, and newspaper revenue from advertisements declined to $16 billion in 2016, down from about $50 billion 10 years earlier.
