Consultants throw cold water on U.S. doctor's 'magic potion' for Charlie Gard

But Britain's courts have refused permission on the grounds it would prolong his suffering without a realistic prospect of it helping the 11-month-old child.

His parents, Chris Gard and Connie Yates, successfully raised money in hopes of bringing their son to the United States for an experimental treatment, but doctors at the Great Ormond Street Hospital in London, where Charlie has been since October, argued in court that it was not in their patient's best interest.

There is lab evidence that the experimental treatment protocol for Charlie prepared by the Bambino Gesu' may work, according to a letter from Rome to London's Great Ormond Street Hospital which on Friday officially asked its doctors to be allowed to administer it. Hirano has offered to treat him with an experimental gene therapy he believes has a 10%...

Tragic Charlie was born with mitochondrial DNA depletion syndrome, a rare and debilitating genetic condition that leaves sufferers severe mental and physical.

The hospital was scheduled to take the child off of life support last month after his parents lost an appeal to take him to the USA for experimental treatment.

Charlie made worldwide headlines earlier this month after President Donald Trump and Pope Francis commented on his case.

The High Court has previously ruled that Charlie's life support should be removed to enable him to die with dignity.

Ms Yates and Charlie's father, Chris Gard, want Mr Justice Francis to rule that Charlie, who suffers from a rare genetic condition and has brain damage, should be allowed to undergo a therapy trial overseen by Dr Hirano in NY.

His parents, from Bedfont, west London, have already lost battles in the High Court, Court of Appeal and Supreme Court.

On Thursday, Hirano told Justice Nicholas Francis that the baby's MRI scan did not necessarily indicate structural damage to the brain.

Hirano will assess Charlie, meet his current immediate-care team and other specialists, including a doctor from the Vatican children's hospital.

Every ruling has been in favor of Charlie's specialists at Great Ormond Street Hospital.
