In spite of tweet, lawyer says Trump not under investigation

Trump lawyer says president isn't under investigation, despite tweets

WASHINGTON, D.C.: One of Donald Trump's lawyers insisted Sunday that the president was not under criminal investigation as part of the sweeping probe into Russia's alleged meddling in American elections, despite the USA leader's tweets angrily calling the whole saga a "distraction". Fox News anchor Chris Wallace seized on a mistake made by Trump lawyer Jay Sekulow, and dunked on him using his own words.

The interviews suggest that Mueller sees the question of attempted obstruction of justice as more than just a "he said, he said" dispute between the president and the fired Federal Bureau of Investigation director, an official said.

In a tweet on Friday, President Donald Trump called the investigation a "witch hunt".

"The tweet from the president was in response to the five anonymous sources purportedly leaking info to The Washington Post", Sekulow told NBC television's "Meet the Press".

"The president has not been and is not under investigation", lawyer Jay Sekelow has declared repeatedly the past few days, only to add to the statement Monday that he didn't know for certain if that was true.

Sekulow got in a heated exchange with Chris Wallace on "Fox News Sunday".

"Trump has a compulsion to counterattack". It showed up again on the President's Twitter page when he said that the "distraction of the witch hunt" would not divert him from his Make America Great mission.

But they said they are anxious about other immigrants, including refugees who may be desperate for help but lack US relations. The official who described the plans was not authorized to discuss them publicly by name and spoke on condition of anonymity.

Mueller is leading the federal investigation into possible ties between the Trump campaign and Russian Federation, while the House Intelligence Committee and several other panels are conducting their own probes into Russia's interference in the 2016 election.

"It will be in the history books", Sekulow said.

Even so, White House Spokesman Sean Spicer said in a June 6 news conference that Trump's tweets should be considered "official statements".

The special counsel, who can be appointed by either the Attorney General or by Congress, was appointed by Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein in in May after the Attorney General Jeff Sessions recused himself from matters related to the Russian Federation probe. The investigation has also reportedly expanded to include whether Trump tried to obstruct justice with the Comey firing. Under these circumstances, Rosenstein must recuse himself from any supervisory role in the special counsel's investigation.

However, the special counsel's independent probe will not affect the House Intelligence Committee's investigation.

The White House spent the day clarifying that the President was not confirming whether he was indeed under investigation, but rather was simply responding to the report.

ABC News reported that, in fact, Mueller had not decided yet whether to investigate the president. Angus King, an independent from ME, stressed that the probe will likely last for a long time.
