Group of Democrats meet behind closed doors to consider ousting Pelosi

Pelosi's office claims even loftier triumphs, saying she's raised more than $500 million for Democrats since entering the party leadership in the early 2000s, including $141.5 million in the 2015-2016 cycle.

During her weekly news conference around the same time, a defiant Pelosi challenged the idea that she should go simply because the GOP base doesn't like her, noting that the right tends to denigrate whatever Democrat happens to be in power.

"Nancy Pelosi was a great speaker", Rep. Kathleen Rice, D-N.Y., said on MSNBC.

The frustrated Democrats met in Rice's office a day earlier to discuss their options as they face long odds of knocking out the woman who has led the Democratic caucus for almost 15 years from minority to majority and back, raised tens of millions of dollars and has had multiple legislative successes. "We are the party that stands up for working families and the middle class, yet many of them are not voting for us".

Fueling their fears is Democrat Jon Ossoff's loss in a hotly contested House race in the northern Atlanta suburbs.

"I think that she's a tremendous leader of our caucus, with the kind of strategic talent and experience that we really need to succeed in the minority and particularly when we don't control the House or Senate", said Rep. Adam Schiff, D-Calif. Tim Ryan, D-Ohio, who was unsuccessful past year in trying to unseat Pelosi. The bad news is that there aren't that many other Republican-held districts with a lot of highly educated voters. Are the attacks accurate? No. She can even argue, like she did on Thursday, that she was instrumental in getting the Democrats back into the House majority in 2006 after 12 years of Republican rule.

But its characteristics on paper - namely the fact that President Donald Trump won here by less than 2 points last fall and that it's a well-educated area - will keep it competitive, one GOP aide said.

Instead, he said Democrats need to focus on developing a message that wins over voters in Republican-leaning districts.

What we learned from Tuesday's special congressional election in Georgia is that there is no magical solution to the country's Trump problem. The Republicans have "young guns and this new group of new faces, which people like to see in politics", he said, a group within which the 43-year old from Youngstown, Ohio might fit himself, were he not a Democrat.

That reality was the subtext for Pelosi's taunting remarks Thursday in which she cast her Democratic critics as hungry for attention rather than serious about ousting her.

In an interview with Fox News Channel's "Fox & Friends" that aired Friday morning, Trump said of Pelosi: "I hope she doesn't step down". When Democrats have no choice but to rely on a banjo-playing, cowboy hat-wearing political neophyte to run a statewide race in Montana, it's a safe assumption that there are some recruiting issues that run deeper than House leadership.

Rep. Seth Moulton, D-Mass, echoed that sentiment on CNN. The present reality remains bleak for Democrats nationwide: they're 0-4 this year in special elections, despite one of the most unpopular Republican administrations in history.

"I don't make this statement lightly - I've never said it before", Luján wrote. "And usually they go after the most effective leaders, because they want to take us, diminish the opportunity that we have".

"The Democrats actually are competitive when they talk about Medicare, college tuition, wages", Watters said.
