China talks focusing on North Korean threat

North Korea's missile and nuclear threats are expected to be among the issues discussed at the inaugural U.S.

The United States and China agreed Wednesday that companies of the two countries should not do business with U.N. -blacklisted North Korean entities, U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson said as he urged Beijing to exert "much greater pressure" on Pyongyang.

Noting that up to now, Chinese have taken a fairly limited profile in counter-terrorism efforts undertaken by the worldwide community, Thornton said, adding that the USA would like to see them step up and take more responsibility.

An editorial earlier this week in the Global Times newspaper, which has strong links to Beijing's rulers, cautioned Donald Trump about assuming that China holds the key with regards to North Korea. "For example, we both agreed that our companies should not do business with any United Nations -designated North Korean entities in accordance with these resolutions", he said. "So what you're seeing is, I think, the American people's frustration with a regime that provokes, provokes and provokes, and basically plays outside the rules, plays fast and loose with the truth, that sort of thing", he said.

"We see a young man go over there healthy and with a minor act of mischief come home dead, basically - dies immediately after he gets here".

"We hope the two sides can, in the principle of mutual respect, mutual benefit and equality, exchange views and extend co-operation on the anti-terrorism issues of common interest", Geng said.

The death of an American college student after his imprisonment in North Korea is threatening to overshadow the talks at the State Department. She said the USA would be consulting with China on implementation of U.N. Security Council resolutions that are meant to restrict revenue and technology for the North's nuclear and missile programs.

Tropical Storm Cindy makes landfall in Louisiana
Crews in Memphis, Tennessee, had worked Thursday to clear storm drains to help prevent street flooding before the storm set in. It's the third storm of the season, which got an early start with Tropical Storm Arlene in April.

The talks are meant to build on progress made when President Donald Trump met China's president in Florida in April.

At the dialogue, China also reiterated its opposition to the deployment of the U.S. Terminal High-Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) anti-missile defense system in South Korea, saying such deployment should be halted and revoked.

Last month, Beijing and Washington signed a limited deal to open new markets for each other's exports and a long-standing friend of the Chinese leadership, Iowa Governor Terry Branstad, was confirmed as ambassador.

Thornton said the talks would also cover the South China Sea, where Beijing's island-building and construction of possible military facilities have rattled neighbors and caused tension with Washington; U.S. The U.S. often sends powerful warplanes in times of heightened animosities with North Korea. "So that means actually using the economic leverage they have to begin squeezing that North Korean economy".

"The conflicting parties on the Korean Peninsula are North Korea and the US-South Korea alliance", it reminded its readers.

Last week, Tillerson told a Senate hearing that China's efforts on North Korea had been "uneven".
