1 tropical storm churns in Gulf, 2nd disbands in Caribbean

More rain, possible thunderstorms coming to South Carolina while Tropical Storm Cindy approaches Gulf Coast

Rain chances will be held at 20%.

Even before Cindy reached tropical storm strength, rain bands from the weather disturbance in the Gulf of Mexico began pushing ashore on Tuesday and the storm's center was on track toward southwestern Louisiana and eastern Texas by Wednesday morning.

In Mississippi, officials handed out sandbags in towns along the coast in preparation for likely flooding, the AP added.

Located about 230 miles south of Morgan City, LA, and 305 miles southeast of Galveston, TX, Cindy is moving toward the northwest at 7 mph.

Forecasters are advising those in the watch area to prepare for winds as high as almost 60 miles per hour and areas of locally heavy rain and flooding. The core of wind with Cindy will stay west of Alabama, we do not expect any significant or damaging wind from the storm, however for the coastal area of the western Florida Panhandle, a wind advisory is in effect until 6 pm CDT Thursday.

Additional rainfall amounts of 3 to 6 inches are possible through Thursday, the National Weather Service said.

The Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1 through November 30. The storm system is not expected to strengthen on Tuesday and is forecast to weaken to a tropical depression on Wednesday.

The Louisiana National Guard has moved high water vehicles and helicopters into areas that could flood.

Tropical storm Cindy threatens Gulf Coast
It was enough to make for a soggy morning commute around the region but will begin to fizzle out later in the day. Tropical Storm Cindy has sustained winds of 60 miles per hour as it moves northwest across the Gulf of Mexico.

Larry Godfrey, who owns the Escatawpa (Ess-kuh-TAW'-puh) Hollow Campground in Alabama, near the state line with MS, says the Escatawpa River is already high from rainfall, and he expects his campground will flood. Tornado warnings were also issued for Hancock County, MS. "I think we'll be all right", said tourist Crystal Moneaux.

Power outages have also been reported in Metairie, Louisiana.

Officials believe Cindy could have a major impact along a 500-mile swath of the Gulf Coast. Edwards told Tommy Tucker this morning that it still is anticipated that Cindy will be a rain event.

University of Southern Mississippi officials are continuing to monitor Tropical Storm Cindy, which now is expected to make landfall either late Wednesday or early Thursday in southwest Louisiana and east Texas.

While conditions were fairly clear in New Orleans as of 8 a.m. Wednesday, forecasters say more rain is coming.

A tropical storm warning was issued for part of Venezuela's east coast. A tropical storm watch covered a large swath of the upper Texas coast from west of High Island to San Luis Pass.

This could cause minor to moderate coastal flooding. Areas of Biloxi, MS, are reporting flooding, leading to about 300 road closures, WLOX reported.
