US says it downed Iran-made drone in Syria

The IS group did not immediately acknowledge the strikes.

Ehud Ya'ari of Israel's Channel 2 said that only one of the Iranian missiles actually managed to reach its intended target in Syria.

Tehran has retaliated to the twin attacks claimed by the Islamic State earlier this month targeting their positions in Syria with missile strikes. But the Revolutionary Guard said it was sending a broader message to its archrival Saudi Arabia and the United States.

Shiite-majority Iran and Sunni-majority Saudi Arabia have long had a sectarian feud.

US officials have claimed that some of these missiles have been given to the Houthi rebels in Yemen, who are now fighting a coalition of Arab forces, some of whom are USA allies.

After the three encounters, Assad's forces wheeled around and seized territory to the north all the way to the Iraqi border, leaving US forces and their allies largely isolated in the southeast and cutting off their path to the Islamic State group. The first Iranian test of the Shahab-3 was in 1998 and the missile was declared operational in 2003.

On Monday, Russia warned that US aircraft operating in specific regions in Syria would be considered "air targets" for its forces after a US Navy jet shot down a pro-regime fighter jet. The White House has not commented on Iran's missile attacks inside Syria. While Iran has other ballistic missiles it says can reach longer distances, Sunday's strike appears to be the furthest carried out overseas.

Iran warns missile attack on IS in Syria can be repeated
Iran's last foreign missile strike is believed to have been carried out in April 2001, targeting an exiled Iranian group in Iraq . It said the boat was one of two Iranian boats fishing in the Gulf that had been pushed off course by waves.

The Iranian missiles were launched from Kermanshah in western Iran near the border with Iraq.

"IRGC warns takfiri terrorists and their regional and trans-regional sponsors that if the lowly and satanic measures against the Iranian nation are repeated, [our] revolutionary wrath. will send criminals to hell", he said.

TEHRAN: Iran has called in the Swiss charge d'affaires, who looks after USA interests, to protest against comments by Secretary of State Rex Tillerson backing "peaceful transition" in the Islamic republic.

But it was also meant to show that "Iran, in its fight against terrorism, needs missiles - and sanctions have no influence on its defence policies". However, the test launches haven't affected Iran's 2015 nuclear deal with world powers. China is thought to have aided Iran with missile technology as early as the late 1980s, while North Korean/Iranian cooperation in missile technology also dates back to the 1980s. "Even Hezbollah can do better", he quoted the sources as saying.

Israeli security officials said Monday they were studying the missile strike to see what they could learn about its accuracy and capabilities.

"We are following their actions".

"Our policy toward Iran is to push back on this hegemony. and to work toward support of those elements inside of Iran that would lead to a peaceful transition of that government", the United States top diplomat said. "And I have one message to Iran: Do not threaten Israel".
