US Looks to Restore Military Hotline With Russia

The Defence Ministry said the Syrian plane was destroyed and the fate of the pilot unknown

In response, Russian Federation warned that it will treat all United States coalition aircraft west of the Euphrates River in Syria as "airborne targets" as a result of the incident. Syria attacks America's allies against Islamic State militants.

"We will work diplomatically and militarily in the coming hours to re-establish deconfliction", said US Gen. Joe Dunford, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, referring to the hotline.

"Repeated military actions by USA aircraft against the lawful armed forces of a United Nations member state, under the guise of a 'fight against terrorism, ' are a profound violation of global law and, in fact, military aggression against the Syrian Arab Republic", the Russian Defence Ministry said in a statement.

The jet was downed on Sunday evening after regime forces targeted the US-backed Syrian Democratic Forces, an alliance of Arab and Kurdish fighters battling IS.

The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights says it was extended 24 hours.

Russia, a key backer of Syrian President Bashar Assad, has been providing an air cover to the government's offensive on the Islamic State group since 2015.

The US military statement said it acted in "collective self-defence" of its partner forces and the US did not seek a fight with the Syrian Government or its Russian supporters.

Long road: Koepka's journey now includes a US Open title
A fourth place finish at the 2014 US Open had given Koepka a taste of what it might be like to challenge for a major. Never mind "The Home of Golf", Scotland nearly represented "The End of Golf" to Brooks Koepka .

At the White House, spokesman Sean Spicer said: "It's important and crucial that we keep lines of communication open to deconflict potential issues".

Russia's deputy foreign minister Sergei Ryabkov said itwas a "continuation of America's line to disregard the norms of worldwide law".

Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov said of the US military action in Syria, "What is this, if not an act of aggression?"

Russia's Defence Ministry announced that it was ending US-Russian co-operation in Syria that had been created to prevent a direct conflict between the great powers.

A top Russian diplomat has condemned the United States for shooting down a Syrian Air Force fighter jet the previous day as an act of "aggression".

Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov, in comments to Russian news agencies, compared the downing to "helping the terrorists that the U.S.is fighting against".
