Redbridge community 'stands together' following Finsbury Park mosque attack

JK Rowling speaks up against Daily Mail headline

There are reports that the driver, Darren Osborne, a 47-year-old-man from Cardiff who was arrested, made anti-Islamic remarks while trying unsuccessfully to flee the scene.

Police have been searching a residential address in Pentwyn, where Osborne is listed as living.

One Muslim died, though police have not confirmed whether the vehicle attack was the immediate cause.

Prime Minister Theresa May on Monday called the incident a "terror attack" and "every bit as sickening" as recent attacks to hit the United Kingdom, adding that the driver acted alone.

Interior minister Amber Rudd said Muslims needed to feel safe in Britain and the government was working to tackle all forms of hate crime and extremism.

A driver plowed into a crowd of Muslim worshippers outside a north London mosque early Monday in an attack that police said they were investigating as a terrorist incident.

In a statement on behalf of his family, his nephew Ellis Osborne, 26, said: "We are massively shocked".

Photographs of the van used in the attack showed it was rented from Pontyclun Van Hire in Rhondda Cynon Taff.

Councillor Jas Athwal and Farouk Ismail, of Formo, said the attack had "led to concerns among our community and in particular within our Muslim community". The Imam at the Finsbury Park Mosque intervened to make sure no one harmed Osborne after members of his congregation detained him.

The incident at Finsbury Park was the fourth attack in Britain since March and the third to involve a vehicle deliberately driven at pedestrians. "Everybody is angry and there is a tiny, tiny proportion of people who are insane enough to give in to their anger", he said.

At a vigil in Finsbury Park on Tuesday evening, Jeremy Corbyn, the Labour leader and the area's representative in Parliament, urged the local community to stick together and to challenge people who say racist remarks.

Mohammed Kozbar, chairman of Finsbury Park Mosque, praised the "great response" from the community and said the attack was "similar" to those on Westminster, Manchester and London Bridge. If British authorities can't prove that they are capable of handling the ongoing threat from ISIS among Britain's own Muslim citizens-and given the flood of British ISIS fighters returning home, it's unlikely they'll be able to-we can expect more of these "counter-attacks" on British Muslims.

During Monday's attack, witnesses described hearing the assailant shout: "I am going to kill Muslims!"

"As a mum my heart goes out to everyone in Finsbury Park", she said. In addition to the attackers, seven people are killed and dozens of others wounded.

This year Ramadan began on May 26 and ends on Saturday June 24. "Just because one or two people believe that it doesn't mean the whole Muslim community does".

The biggest factor fomenting anti-Muslim feeling is Islamist violence, he said.
