Kyrgios retires injured at Queen's, says fit for Wimbledon

Nick Kyrgios Queen's Club Championship Wimbledon French Open Jo Wilfried Tsonga

Nick Kyrgios retired with a left hip injury on the opening day of the Aegon Championships at Queen's, putting his Wimbledon prospects in doubt.

However, Young managed the situation well, ensuring he kept his opponent moving around the court and eventually took the first set.

At his previous showing at Queen's, Kyrgios let the crowd by tanking shots but they were more sympathetic to his case this year as he fell victim to some slippery grass.

Shaking off that injury scare, the 32-year-old won seven games in a row and even found time to high-five a ball girl as he avenged his loss to Mannarino in Monte Carlo earlier this year.

"Yeah, 100 percent", Kyrgios said.

Kyrgios was treated on court before resuming the match and completed four more games and then the tiebreak before deciding enough was enough.

'I had the injections a couple of weeks ago, then I was in rehab for a couple of weeks and it settled down and then on that fall I just felt sharp pain so I felt everything I was pretty much feeling a month ago.

Bear kills 16-year-old runner during race in Alaska
In the USA state of Alaska black bear killed a 16-year-old participant of the mass of the race over rough terrain. A day later, a Pogo Mine contract employee in Alaska's Interior was killed - also by a black bear.

"I'd play Wimbledon if I was injured pretty bad, anyway. I mean, it's tough to play through". "I'm sure it will".

"I don't really have time to go home or anything".

"For me it was really important to have a victory".

Kyrgios said he would be fit for Wimbledon, which starts on July 3. "It's not great at the moment", he said.

Tsonga's strong start to his grass-court campaign was the flawless way to erase the painful memory of an embarrassing first-round exit against unheralded Argentine Renzo Olivo on the clay at Roland Garros. "I had to play my best tennis to get over him", Tsonga said.

If he can find his best form, Tsonga, who lost to Andy Murray in the 2011 Queen's final, could be one of the major threats to world number one Murray, who is seeking a sixth championship triumph.

Earlier, fifth-seeded Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, playing his first match since a surprise first-round exit at his home French Open, beat Adrian Mannarino 6-2, 6-2, and sixth-seeded Grigor Dimitrov - the victor of this Wimbledon warmup in 2014 - looked impressive in all departments of his game in defeating Ryan Harrison 6-3, 6-1.
