French polls predict Macron's party will secure large majority

Marine Le Pen

Following his win in the presidential vote, Macron changed the name of his party to La Republique En Marche! Then again, it's the biggest majority in the Assembly since the 1968 elections and the result also confirms the destruction of the Socialist party and the disarray of the Republicians.

France's far-right leader Marine Le Pen won a seat in parliament for the first time, but it was a bittersweet victory that masked an electoral debacle for her National Front (FN) party.

Sunday's election saw a record number of women voted into parliament, due largely to Macron's decision to field a gender-balanced candidate list.

Although the results of the 11 overseas seats will not be known until later today, the new government of LREM and Modem has 351 seats and well above the majority of 289.

The Republicans hung on to between 97 and 130 seats, down from over 200 in the last parliament, and remain the main opposition party.

With a party history stretching back more than 100 years, the Socialists are part of the political fabric of the French Republic.

Do you something awesome to share with the world?

Jean-Claude Cambadélis, the socialist leader, has since announced his retirement, and said the left must "to change everything, its form and its substance, its ideas and its organisation". The election of Mr Macron to the presidency of the Republic seems to have sent the country into a state of indifference and weariness vis-a-vis the Republic, which is very worrying.

Bean: Celtics shouldn't trade the No. 3 pick for Jimmy Butler
The Boston Celtics have observers of the Bulls on high alert, perhaps for natural reasons due to their affection for Jimmy Butler. The NBA Draft is days away and a wild, potentially franchise-changing week could be ahead for the Chicago Bulls .

France's youngest leader since Napoleon and having never before held elected office, Macron has seized on the growing resentment towards a political elite perceived as out of touch, and on public frustration at its failure to create jobs and spur stronger growth.

Ferrand was a Socialist member of parliament who deserted the now-devastated party to join Macron's cause. "Massive abstention considerably weakens the legitimacy of the new National Assembly".

France's far left, however, fared better - the France Insoumise (France Unbowed) party of Jean-Luc Melenchon took 17 seats.

In the presidential election, Le Pen won more than 50 percent of votes in her head-to-head with Macron in 45 voting districts and drew a total of 10.7 million votes, a historic high for the far-right party.

The pound traded slightly higher at $1.2796 against the dollar amid hopes the United Kingdom government's weak political position after the general election and the Grenfell Tower fire may mean a "softer" version of Brexit will prevail.

Despite a strong platform for Macron, a low voter turnout underlines that he may yet have to tread carefully with French reforms.

A record number of women were elected to parliament - 223, or 38.65%, with the highest numbers among the centrists and hard-left.

Foreign Minister Sigmar Gabriel also welcomed the vote's outcome, tweeting that it paved "the way for reforms in France+Europe".
