Dems say they'll slow Senate work over secretive care bill

Why the secrecy? The Senate bill is being kept under wraps because if there were transparency about the health care plan that the GOP wants to replace the Affordable Care Act with, some might criticize the GOPcare or Trumpcare legislation - aptly and correctly. That has frustrated people in Washington and in lawmakers' home districts.

"We've been chanting about the various aspects of the legislation".

They threatened to slow the Senate's work with procedural motions.

That pales compared to how the Democratic-run Congress handled Obama's legislation. From the Senate floor, on Facebook, and on Twitter with the hashtag #HoldTheFloor, Democratic senators continue to rally the grassroots to fight this bill. Here's the rationale Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer gave on the Senate floor today. "Patients groups like ours need to make sure that our patients' needs for health care will be met". But they can be disruptive.

Democrats' reasoning for the inquiries was to point out that, while partisan, the Affordable Care Act did have hearings and Republican amendments.

Outside groups like MoveOn.org, Indivisible, and Planned Parenthood Action have all been rallying against the Republican plan and urging Democrats to escalate their opposition.

Each time, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., calmly rose from his desk at the front of the chamber and objected to their requests. So he says there shouldn't be any surprises.

"One out of every seven Americans, 14 percent, think they will lose their health insurance under the Republican plan". Here's Alaska Senator Lisa Murkowski.

Critics have estimated that the House bill would curtail Medicaid by some $800 billion, and some Republican senators from states where Medicaid was expanded under Obama have expressed concern about passing legislation that slashes aid to thousands of constituents.

LISA MURKOWSKI: Yeah, I've got a problem with it.

French polls predict Macron's party will secure large majority
Foreign Minister Sigmar Gabriel also welcomed the vote's outcome, tweeting that it paved "the way for reforms in France+Europe". France's far left, however, fared better - the France Insoumise (France Unbowed) party of Jean-Luc Melenchon took 17 seats.

"Until I see the bill and the (Congressional Budget Office) assessment of the bill, I'm not going to feel comfortable taking a position", Collins told CNN.

BENNETT: But I talked to a staffer today who put it to me this way.

Democrats set to work Monday on a coordinated effort to slow the Senate's work, holding late-night speeches to try to focus attention on how Republicans are crafting legislation to overhaul the nation's health care system in private.

McConnell said he expected a "discussion draft" of the bill to be released Thursday with a likely vote next week, NBC News reported. And: "This health care bill will impact millions and millions of Americans". They're not as quick to do something about it, even though just two or three members could drastically alter McConnell's approach by withholding their support until the process was made more open.

Senator Lisa Murkowski of Alaska, one of the key moderate holdouts, said leaders shouldn't expect to be able to buy off her vote with an Alaska-specific solution.

BENNETT: They've got slim margins and a lot of competing interests.

"This is like a really big deal to get this right for the country", Murkowski told reporters.

Having worked my way through way too much Congressional history, I don't like to ever say that something has "never" happened before in the House or Senate - because there probably is a legislative example that we have forgotten about from many years ago.

MCEVERS: NPR's Geoff Bennett on Capitol Hill, thank you. The question is, is that enough of a motivating factor?
