USA says it downed Syrian warplane that attacked US-backed fighters

"In accordance with rules of engagement and in collective self-defense of Coalition partnered forces, [the Syrian SU-22] was immediately shot down by a U.S. F/A-18E Super Hornet", the news release said.

"This attack comes at a time when the Syrian Arab army and its allies are advancing in the fight against ISIS terrorists who are being defeated the Syrian desert in more ways than one, " the statement read. About a month earlier, the United States fired cruise missiles at a Syrian military airfield after a regime-led chemical attack, although the strike was timed to avoid casualties.

The Pentagon said Sunday a Syrian SU-22 dropped bombs on coalition-partnered fighters near the town of Tabqah.

Earlier this month, a U.S. F-15 shot down an Iranian drone in southern Syria after it fired on US -backed forces. They added that the pilot of the destroyed plane is still missing after the USA attack.

The incident took place in southern Syria near a base where the US-led coalition was training Syrian rebels fighting the Islamic State group.

A Navy F/A-18E Super Hornet shot down a Syrian SU-22 on Sunday, giving the US military its first air-to-air kill since 1999.

U.S. Navy fighter jet shot down a Syrian government warplane after it attacked Washington-backed fighters near ISIS' de facto capital of Raqqa, the U.S. -led coalition said Sunday. US -led forces have increased their presence at Tanf to deter pro-Syrian government forces in the area.

Coalition aircraft in a show of force stopped the initial advance.

"The Coalition's mission is to defeat ISIS in Iraq and Syria", its statement said.

Earlier, Syrian forces attacked coalition fighters in Ja'Din, wounding a number of fighters and driving them from the town.
