Sinn Féin to meet Theresa May, warn against DUP deal

Alliance Deputy Leader Stephen Farry has warned of the dangers of Tories working with the DUP

Delegations from Northern Irish Parties met the Prime Minister at Downing Street to express their concern at the impact a deal with the DUP could have on efforts to reconvene the powersharing executive.

"I am concerned about the deal, I am wary about it, I am dubious about it, both for peace process reasons but also for other reasons as well", he said in an interview with BBC Radio 4's the World at One. I am wary about it.

It is thought that an announcement on an agreement will be delayed as a result of the Grenfell Tower tragedy - and may not come until next week.

"If there are difficulties with the Northern Ireland executive or with any one of a number of things that might well arise during the Brexit negotiations, it's very important that there's an honest broker - and the only honest broker can be the United Kingdom government", Major said.

The party would oppose any deal that would, he said, undermine that agreement.

Earlier in the week ministers had already said the Queen's Speech was likely to be set back from its scheduled date of Monday June 19, because of ongoing negotiations.

During the appearance, Ms O'Neill said: 'We made very clear to the prime minister that any deal between herself and the DUP can not undermine the Good Friday agreement.

After meeting May on Tuesday, Foster said discussions on supporting May's minority government were "going well" and should be concluded soon.

Adams' claim comes after former Conservative Prime Minister John Major voiced his serious reservations about a deal between the Tories and the DUP to prop up the Conservative government.

Theresa May has signalled she is "confident" of getting the Queen's Speech through the Commons whether or not a deal is reached with the Democratic Unionists (DUP) by the State Opening of Parliament next week.

There has been "slower progress" in talks between the Conservatives and DUP, with an agreement unlikely to be announced on Wednesday.

A senior Conservative source said: "We are making a lot of progress".

However, the source added that a full deal on the government's programme wasn't required before the opening of Parliament, adding that there would be "steady dialogue" with the DUP.

Farron was a strong opponent of Brexit and supported a second referendum on Britain leaving the EU.

Mrs May stressed that Brexit would happen and the timetable remains on course.
