Milwaukee Sheriff Clarke rejects Homeland Security position

Reports: Sheriff Clarke no longer taking job with Homeland Security

The conservative firebrand said last month he was taking a job as an assistant secretary at the DHS.

Sheriff David Clarke announced in May that he would be joining the Department of Homeland Security, but he has changed his mind and rescinded his acceptance of that post, it was announced late Saturday.

Clarke adviser Craig Peterson said the sheriff believes he is of better use to President Trump "in a more aggressive role". According to the Post, Clarke's appointment was subject to delays, which contributed to him backing out of the position.

Now he can add a job withdrawal merit badge to that ridiculous uniform he wears.

Clarke faced significant pushback over his reported position, which intensified after CNN's KFile team found out that he plagiarized 47 parts of his 2013 master's thesis with the Naval Postgraduate School. "No such announcement with regard to the Office of Partnership and Engagement has been made".

Resort outside Mali's capital under attack
Shots have been fired at a resort near Mali's capital Bamako , according to a tweet from the UN Mission to the country. In a video released in March, jihadists said those two were joining together along with two Mali-based terror groups.

Sheriff Clarke, who gained national attention when he spoke at the Republican National Convention last July, is a vocal proponent of gun rights and is a member of the National Rifle Association.

Clarke called the storm over the jail deaths a "manufactured issue". As sheriff, David Clarke is in charge of the Milwaukee County jail; local authorities are now reviewing incidents where inmates died while in custody there. Terrill Thomas died in 2016 of severe dehydration after being denied water for seven days.

Also, county auditors were looking into allegations of waste and fraud involving Clarke for his handling of an incident at Mitchell International Airport after his run-in with a 24-year-old Riverwest man on a Milwaukee flight earlier this year.

Neither the White House nor the Department of Homeland Security ever acknowledged that Sheriff Clarke was actually offered a job at the agency.
