'Cars 3' Races Past 'Wonder Woman' to No. 1

Cars 3 cruises toward $50m-plus weekend

Once the numbers came in, it was Cars 3 racing to the front of the pack and taking the weekend box office crown. In total, the Cars films have now grossed over $1 billion worldwide, and over a whopping $10 billion in global merchandise sales.

Otherwise, Tupac biopic "All Eyez on Me" from Lionsgate and Summit is beating out expectations with an estimated $27.1 million from 2,471 locations. 47 Meters Down placed fifth with an estimated $11.5 million, while Rough Night had a rough seventh place opening, earning $8.1 million. Cars, which hit theaters in 2006, opened to $60.1 million in its North American debut before topping out at $462.2 million worldwide. The third installment of the high-speed franchise brought in $53.5 million thanks to its showings in over 4,200 theaters, thus ousting Wonder Woman by about $13 million.

In "Cars 3", Owen Wilson returns as the voice of Lightning McQueen. Sony can't be happy with the performance of the R comedy "Rough Night", which only took in $8 million on over 3,000 screens.

Here are the estimated numbers for the top five films at the box office for June 16-18, 2017.

"Wonder Woman", meanwhile, continues to perform very well in its third week with $40.7 million, only a 30 percent drop from last weekend's $58.5 million total. The film had been expected to generate $21.8 million, according to Hollywood Stock Exchange.

I'm working every day, seeing how I can be the best teammate, the best player I can be. "I just wanted to lay it all out there". So you have a clear sense of what matters when you go through that stuff". "I'm confident we'll have him back".

The biopic, starring Demetrius Shipp Jr., grabbed an A CinemaScore. Just over half of critics positively reviewed the movie, about a bachelorette party gone awry.

This weekend featured a heated race between four new films that opened in wide release. It's the first major release from Entertainment Studios, which acquired the project from its original distributor, Dimension Films.

The good news is that Wonder Woman, the best movie now in the top ten at the box office, casually strolled past the $500 million mark at the global box office.

Though these kind of movies historically never do well in theaters (everyone waits until these titles hit cable/streaming), Sony was hoping with a cast that included Scarlett Johansson, Kate McKinnon, and "Broad City" star Ilana Glazer, there would be a lot of girls' night out treks to the movies.
