FLDS Leader Lyle Jeffs arrested in South Dakota

Jeffs complied with officers when he was arrested and acknowledged he was the fugitive they had been searching for, said Eric Barnhart, FBI special agent in charge for the Salt Lake City Division.

Authorities had been looking for Jeffs since June 18, 2016, when he escaped from home confinement in Salt Lake City pending trial on charges in an alleged multimillion-dollar food stamp fraud scheme. He was being held without bond on a Federal Marshals Service hold in South Dakota's Minnehaha County, according to booking records. An FBI spokeswoman said Thursday, June 15, 2017, that Jeffs was arrested in South Dakota on Wednesday, June 14.

Rothschadl says police made the traffic stop as Jeffs drove through the marina after using a bathroom.

Barnhart declined comment on whether Haug was the tipster credited with helping authorities capture Jeffs, but Yankton County Chief Deputy Sheriff Michael Rothschadl said authorities looked for Jeffs in the area because of the pawn shop tip.

The FBI believes Lyle Jeffs may have used his status as a bishop within the FLDS in order to find places to stay without detection by law enforcement.

"He used a substance which may have been olive oil to lubricate the Global Positioning System tracking band and slip it off his ankle", FBI Special Agent in Charge Eric Barnhart told a Fox affiliate at the time.

Prosecutors allege that 11 FLDS leaders, including Lyle Jeffs, conspired to defraud the federal Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), or food stamps, and conspired to commit money laundering.

Prosecutors accused Jeffs and other sect leaders of instructing followers to buy items with their food stamp cards and give them to a church warehouse where leaders decided how to distribute products to followers.

After Jeffs sold two pairs of Leatherman pliers for $37 and provided his ID on Tuesday, a suspicious employee at River City Treasures and Pawn in Yankton looked up online the name he had been given and realized the man was wanted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, owner Kevin Haug said in an interview Thursday. Barnhart said it is unclear if Jeffs spent any time there. Warren Jeffs is now serving a life sentence in a Texas prison. The disbursement of the reward money has not yet been determined, Barnhart said.

After his brother's imprisonment, Lyle Jeffs became acting leader of the FLDS sect, a radical offshoot of Mormonism that began splintering from the mainstream church more than a century ago. "We had very serious concerns".

Days later, Lyle Jeffs disappeared after investigators say he used olive oil to slip a Global Positioning System ankle monitor off his foot without triggering an alarm.

Lyle Jeffs pleaded not guilty to the two-count indictment in February 2016 and was released from jail on June 9, 2016 ahead of his October trial date.

Nine of them accepted plea deals and one had his charges dismissed.

Thursday morning, police in South Dakota confirmed Jeffs had been caught.
