Fresh questions for Sessions _ and he'll answer in public

Comey's dad says his son 'laughs' over subject of leaking

Attorney General Jeff Sessions, facing fresh questions about his Russian contacts during the election campaign and his role in the firing of James Comey, will be interrogated in a public hearing by former Senate colleagues on Tuesday.

Sessions' testimony is not expected to go into great detail, a source with knowledge told ABC News.

Among the questions Durbin would like to see answered are why Sessions felt he needed to recuse himself from the Justice Department's investigation of Russian interference in the 2016 election, and what involvement he had, if any, in firing James Comey as director of the FBI. Kamala Harris, D-Calif., asked Comey a series of questions about Sessions' involvement in the Russian Federation investigation during the two weeks between Trump expressing his "hope" that Comey could let go of the probe into former national security adviser Michael Flynn and Sessions' recusal from inquiries related to the election. Republicans have pressed Trump to say whether he has tapes of private conversations with Comey and provide them to Congress if he does - or possibly face a subpoena. Attorney General-designate, Sen. Jeff Sessions, testifies on Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C., January 10, 2017, at his confirmation hearing before the Senate Judiciary Committee.

"(Sessions) believes it is important for the American people to hear the truth directly from him and looks forward to answering the committee's questions tomorrow", a Justice Department spokesperson said.

In order for his statements to have constituted perjury, Sessions would have had to make the false statements with both intent and knowledge that they were false.

Sessions is likely to be asked about his conversations with Ambassador Sergey Kislyak and whether there were more encounters that should have been made public.

Comey also testified that later, he implored "the attorney general to prevent any future direct communication between the president and me".

The Justice Department ultimately agreed to a Tuesday public hearing in an attempt to show there's nothing to hide and nothing controversial about Sessions' interactions with Russian officials, officials said.

That list included a demand for a cut in Northern Ireland's corporation tax rate to help it attract foreign investment. There could have been a leadership contest which would have exposed all the old Tory divisions on Europe.

Sessions, among the earliest high-profile backers of Donald Trump's presidential campaign, will appear days after explosive testimony by ousted FBI director James Comey suggested Trump sought to interfere with the sprawling Russian Federation investigation.

"In light of reports regarding Mr. Comey's testimony before the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence, it is important that I have an opportunity to address these matters in the appropriate forum", Sessions wrote over the weekend. Comey asked last week.

In addition, Comey has said Sessions did not respond when he complained that he did not want to be left alone with Trump again.

Comey said Trump "sat behind the desk and a group of us sat in a semi-circle of about six chairs facing him on the other side of the desk".

The former Federal Bureau of Investigation director said he contacted Sessions after a meeting with Trump in the Oval Office where Sessions and Jared Kushner, Trump's son-in-law and senior adviser, were asked to leave and Comey was alone with the president.

What Sessions will and won't choose to answer "is up to him", CNN's senior legal analyst Jeffrey Toobin told Wolf Blitzer on "The Situation Room" on Monday. "And so I don't think any of that is going to go anywhere, but I think there's a political operation going on and I think dwelling so much on this stuff".

Did Comey ask for help keeping distance from Trump?

On Monday, in a unusual photo op, members of Trump's Cabinet lavished praise on the President, who has struggled to extricate himself from the Russian Federation cloud over his White House.
