Chelsea Manning talks leaks, transition after prison release

Chelsea Manning declares 'justice has been served' in first interview as free woman

She said she "accepted responsibility" for providing 700,000 military documents on Iraq and Afghanistan to WikiLeaks in 2010 - the biggest military leak in USA history.

Manning was handed a 35-year jail sentence in 2013 for leaking 700,000 classified U.S. army documents to WikiLeaks, but was released last month after President Barack Obama intervened to commute her sentence.

"No one told me to do this". No-one directed me to do this.

In her television interview, she said the hormone therapy was essential.

Manning was convicted and sentenced to 35 years in prison for releasing over 700,000 documents to WikiLeaks.

"Chelsea Manning has served a tough prison sentence", he said, adding later: "It has been my view that given she went to trial, that due process was carried out, that she took responsibility for her crime".

She has not spoken to Mr Obama since her release, but emotionally thanked him in the interview for giving her "another chance".

Manning would eventually become "the first military prisoner to receive health care related to gender transition". She tried to kill herself twice, she said, and fought for the hormone treatments that she says keep her alive.

Manning was just 22 when she shared US diplomatic correspondence, evidence of civilian deaths in Iraq and Afghanistan, low-level battlefield reports from the countries and Guantanamo prison camp detainee profiles with several media outlets.

Manning was released in May from a military prison at Fort Leavenworth, Kan.

In January, Manning was among those granted commutations during Obama's final days in office. "A chance is all I wanted!"

In February 2013, in an effort to avoid the death penalty, then-Bradley Manning pleaded guilty to 10 lesser charges of leaking classified material, saying he had wanted to "spark a domestic debate" about America's "obsession" with "killing and capturing people". Days after being sentenced, she came out as transgender on August 22, 2013. We're the most familiar with it.

She said that she maintains "nothing but utmost respect for the military". "[It] keeps me from feeling like I'm in the wrong body".

"It was really, really terrible", she added. It likely weighed heavily in Obama's decision to reduce her sentence by more than 27 years. "[I stopped seeing] just statistics and information and started seeing people. And that's why I signed up".

"I've been given a chance", she said.
