Cases, but also cafeteria duty, await Gorsuch at high court

It was the fulfillment of a vital campaign promise made by Trump to make the appointment of a strict conservative to the Supreme Court a top priority.

As a lower court judge, Gorsuch had a history of favoring companies to the exclusion of citizens and criticizing people who file environmental protection cases, Gallagher told senators.

Gorsuch is thanking his family for their "perseverance and patience" and his mentor, Justice Anthony Kennedy, for whom he served as a law clerk. There has even been a suggestion that appointing his former clerk to the Court was created to be an enticement to Kennedy to turn in his robe, leaving President Trump to pick out a second Supreme Court justice.

The first was administered earlier that morning by Chief Justice John Roberts with Scalia's widow and one of his sons in attendance, as well as the other eight Supreme Court justices. Holding the bible is Gorsuch's wife Marie Louise Gorsuch.

He fills the almost 14-month-old vacancy created after the death of the late Justice Antonin Scalia, who anchored the court's conservative wing for almost three decades before he died unexpectedly in February 2016.

Trump called the occasion "momentous" and "historic", noting that his power to appoint was among a president's most important. "No. 2, it's genius, in that order, because he knew how much criticism he would get", said Sen. "That's even nice. You think that is easy?" McConnell declared within hours of Scalia's death in February of previous year that then-President Barack Obama should not be allowed to fill the seat.

Jason Schwartz, a Greenpeace spokesman, said Gorsuch's arrival doesn't significantly affect the group because it generally organizes its campaigns at the local and state level and isn't as litigious as other conservation organizations. Senate Republicans used the "nuclear option" in response to the Democrats' filibuster, allowing a simple majority of 51 votes to seat Gorsuch and future Supreme Court nominees.

BC election is underway after weeks of unofficial campaigning ends
As for how the issue may play out ahead of the May 9 election, Bozinoff said that's yet to be seen as the campaigns unfold. The platform included no promise to raise basic welfare rates, which have been frozen since 2007.

Kennedy and Justice Ruth Bader Ginsberg are both in their 80s and Justice Stephen Breyer is 78, raising concern among Democrats that Trump may have another opportunity to move the court in a more definitive conservative direction.

Straw (senior-political science) said Gorsuch "is a good replacement for Justice Scalia, [as] he will be sure to interpret the law and constitution as it was meant to [be]". Like Scalia, Gorsuch is a gifted writer with a flair for turning legal jargon into plain language people can understand.

Gorsuch will be put to work immediately. But in his absence, the Supreme Court has been divided on many critical cases 4-4. He issued a second list later in that summer. Among those under consideration, according to press reports, are several involving the right to carry firearms outside the home, as well as the "right" of businesses to refuse services to same-sex couples.

Gorsuch will take part in the court's next round of oral arguments, starting on April 17.

He will be seated just in time to hear one of the biggest cases of the term: a religious rights dispute over a Missouri law that bars churches from receiving public funds for general aid programmes.

"I will do all my powers permit to be a faithful servant of the Constitution and laws of this great nation", he said. "Justice Scalia was a patriot who revered our Constitution".

"But more often than not, the cases we bring end up in district court, and that's where they end", he said.
