Intel chair Nunes met source of new surveillance documents at White House

Rep. Devin Nunes, R-Calif., announced Wednesday that communications among top Trump campaign advisers - and perhaps even President-elect Donald Trump himself - were incidentally intercepted by USA intelligence agents in November, December and January as part of unrelated information-gathering efforts.

"Because of classification rules, the source could not simply put the documents in a backpack and walk them over to the House Intelligence Committee space", Nunes' spokesman, Jack Langer, said on Monday. "The chairman is extremely concerned by the possible improper unmasking of names of USA citizens, and he began looking into this issue even before President Trump tweeted his assertion that Trump Tower had been wiretapped", Nunes' spokesperson Jack Langer said in a statement provided to ABC News.

A government official said Nunes was seen Tuesday night at the National Security Council offices of the Eisenhower building which, other than the White House Situation Room, is the main area on the complex to view classified information in a secure room. He never claimed this backed up Trump's tweets about being "wiretapped" by President Obama.

The chairman then went to the White House to brief the president on his findings, leaving fellow committee members out of the loop.

"We have been made aware through public reports that Chairman Nunes confirmed he was on the White House grounds on Tuesday and any questions concerning his meeting should be directed to the Chairman", the White House said.

"Nunes" office said the information provided to the chairman came from "executive branch documents that have not been provided to Congress'".

Nunes' disclosure that Trump's own communications may have been picked up in "incidental" collections by domestic spies - and decision to speak to the press and White House before informing the Democrats on the Intelligence Committee - infuriated Democrats and led him to apologize to his colleagues on the panel.

Alex Jones on Friday apologized to the owner of a Washington, D.C., pizzeria for spreading the fake story past year that linked the restaurant to Hillary Clinton's campaign and human trafficking.

White House press secretary Sean Spicer, meanwhile, is playing it coy/ignorant about Nunes' meeting. Nunes told me that he expects that his committee's members, including Democrats, will be able to read these documents themselves at secure locations outside of Congress as soon as this week. "And given that the president's associates are the subject in part of the investigation, that's wholly inappropriate, and, unfortunately, I think it really impugns the credibility of the chairman in terms of his ability to conduct an independent investigation". SR 23 also calls for President Trump to release his tax returns in order to demonstrate he is free from any potential conflicts of interest related to the Russian government, American foreign policy interests, or economic policy prerogatives.
