Johnson, Stein fail to qualify for first debate

The Commission on Presidential Debates announced Friday that third-party candidates Jill Stein and Gary Johnson did not qualify for the first debate at Hofstra University in Hempstead, New York, on September 26.

The candidates needed to make a 15 percent. polling threshold across several major national polls in order to qualify for the debates.

[T] he Board determined that the polling averages called for in the third criterion are as follows: Hillary Clinton (43%), Donald Trump (40.4%), Gary Johnson (8.4%) and Jill Stein (3.2%). Clinton and Trump have both previously confirmed that they will participate in the first debate, set to take place September 26 at Hofstra University in Hempstead, New York. As he says, most pollsters first ask voters to choose between Clinton and Trump, and don't include either his name or Green Party candidate Jill Stein until later in the survey.

In 1992, Hillary Clinton's husband, Bill, won the presidency with only 43 percent of the vote when third-party candidate Ross Perot took nearly 20 percent.

In years past, nearly all polling was conducted by calling landlines, which have gone the way of the dinosaur. On October 4, Clinton running mate Tim Kaine and Trump running mate Mike Pence will go head-to-head during the 90-minute vice presidential debate at Longwood University in Farmville, Virginia, USA Today reported.

Trump also said during the taping that he has not been to a hospital since age 11 because he's "too healthy", NBC News reported . The 70-year-old has blood pressure of 116 over 70, and his total cholesterol is 169, his doctor says.

Libertarian presidential candidate Gary Johnson speaks to supporters and delegates at the National Libertarian Party Convention, Friday, May 27, 2016, in Orlando, Fla. The Libertarian candidate argued, "The conditions of the presidential election of 2016 are extraordinary and without precedent".

Democratic pollster David Mermin said that while Friday's non-invitation was not a surprise, "I imagine that both (the Clinton and Trump) campaigns are happy not to have them there". Johnson and Weld have picked up three newspaper endorsements, which may help keep hopes alive for an appearance in a future debate.

With voters holding such a negative view of the nominees presented by Republicans and Democrats, the debate commission should not lock them into a binary choice.

It would give voters a chance to hear from candidates other than Trump and Clinton who, to be frank, have done little to inspire the electorate. Johnson's campaign, which had previously pointed out that Ross Perot did not poll as high as 15 percent right before the 1992 debates, accused the CPD of rigging the game. Ducking debate opponents is a weird spot for a single-digit candidate to be in, but Johnson may be there.

Johnson's running mate, Bill Weld, a former Republican governor of MA, is also scheduled to speak.
