John Hinckley Jr., Who Shot Ronald Reagan, Freed From Mental Hospital

Reagan was hit by one of six shots fired by John Hinckley, who also seriously injured press secretary James Brady (just behind the car).

A federal judge in July ordered Hinckley's release from St. Elizabeth's Hospital in Washington, finding that he no longer posed a danger to himself or to others.

Some in Kingsmill, the gated Williamsburg community Hinckley will call home, said forgiveness is beside the point. He is not allowed to use social media like Facebook or Twitter without the permission of his entire psychiatric team.

Judge Paul L. Friedman reportedly wrote in his July 27 ruling that Hinckley was a "profoundly troubled 25-year-old young man" when he attempted to kill Reagan to impress Foster.

Information for this article was contributed by Jessica Gresko of The Associated Press and by Shawn Boburg and Moriah Balingit of The Washington Post.

Reagan's family have said they are strongly opposed to Hinckley's release - and past year, his daughter Patti wrote: "I hope the doctors are right when they say that John Hinckley isn't a danger to anyone, but something in me feels they are wrong".

ABC News footage captured the shocking moment Reagan was shot as he waved to the crowd - just weeks after he became president. He has gone bowling, attended lectures and concerts, and volunteered at a nearby church, where he was offered a job this summer, according to court records. "If those people who have concerns were fully informed, they'd have nothing to worry about", he said.
