Tesla defends delay in reporting autopilot crash

Tesla Can It Meet Its Delivery Target

Tesla delivered 14,370 vehicles in the second quarter, missing its forecast of 17,000 units.

According to Tesla, a total of 5,150 customer-ordered deliveries are still in transit at the end of second quarter, higher compared to the 2,615 in transit vehicles recorded at the end of the first quarter.

The company explained that an "extreme production ramp led to nearly half of the quarter's output in the last four weeks". In fact, almost half of the quarter's total production was built in the final month. Overall, it revealed that during the quarter, it has delivered 2,400 vehicles of its luxurious Model X and 12,420 vehicles of Model S.

According to a statement on Sunday, the electric vehicle giant is now anticipating to deliver about 50,000 cars in the second half of the year, suggesting 79,180 Model X SUVs and Model S sedans for the full year.

Investors have lately started to show their reluctance towards Tesla's ambitious goals of selling 500,000 cars by 2018, as the latest misses have put under doubt the company's ability of handling the hype around its upcoming 35.000-dollar Model 3.

Angela Eagle drops out of race to topple UK Labour leader
He also sought to reach out to Mr Corbyn's supporters in the party, insisting that he could also be their champion. James Schneider, of the Corbyn-backing Momentum group, told Newsnight: "Everybody should accept the result".

That does not bode well for the United States electric vehicle maker's ambition to become a mainstream, high-volume manufacturer.

On Tuesday, Chief Executive Elon Musk tweeted in response to the article about the timing of the disclosure that the May fatality "wasn't material" to Tesla.

Last week, it came out that a Tesla Model S had been involved in a fatal crash while the driver was using the autopilot feature. Those vehicles will be delivered early Q3.

Over the past three months, Tesla shares have fallen by 13%. Tesla recently disclosed the accident that occurred on May 7 in which the driver, Joshua Brown was killed when his auto struck a semi-trailer that turned left in front of his vehicle in Williston, Florida. To achieve that, it must deliver an average of at least 25,405 vehicles per quarter for the next two quarters.

The automaker added that the current and projected production levels are in line with "current order rate trends and backlog". Overall, the automaker's prediction of producing 50,000 cars in latter half of 2016 is approximately equals to all of 2015.
