Could BHP Billiton Limited (ADR) Recover After Today's Huge Decline?

BHP's share of its iron ore exports totaled 227M metric tons, below its revised guidance of 229M tons and an initial target of 237M tons that was scuttled following the Samarco dam spill in Brazil.

A day earlier, rival Rio Tinto PLC (RIO.LN) reported a rebound in quarterly iron ore output for the three months through June after it too experienced disruptions from poor weather earlier in the year.

For its 2017 financial year the company expects a big boost to copper production to 1.7 million tonnes helped by a 9% jump in output at Escondida, which is 57%-owned and operated by BHP with Rio Tinto holding the remainder. The final shipment of stockpiles from its Brazilian joint venture, where the catastrophic dam failure killed 19 people and polluted hundreds of miles of rivers in Brazil past year, occurred in its final fiscal quarter, it said.

Overnight benchmark prices at Qingdao port in China were $US56.02, down $US0.84. The Coal segment is engaged in mining of metallurgical coal and thermal (energy) coal. Nevertheless, it is a common misunderstanding that a greater share price directs towards a larger company where stock price might also twist the definite worth of the organization.

The resources giant on Wednesday posted full-year iron ore production of 227 million tonnes, compared to its guidance of 229 million tonnes.

BHP also said it would include up to $175 million of "additional charges", most of which will come from write-downs, "predominantly in our Coal business".

BHP said it is appealing against a lawsuit taken by the Brazil Federal Prosecution Office for $63 billion (155 billion Brazilian reals) in compensation for the Samarco disaster.

BHP Billiton plc (NYSE:BBL) exhibits a P/E ratio of *TBA with a forward P/E of 28.94.

"Over the next 12 months, we expect volumes and costs across our minerals businesses to benefit from our continued drive to safely improve productivity", Chief Executive Andrew Mackenzie said in the company's quarterly production report.

"We can create significant value through further cost reductions, taking advantage of latent capacity in our assets and investing in low-capital projects".
