Obama urges greater respect, understanding after shootings

Following a tumultuous weekend overseas, the White House has announced President Obama will visit Dallas on Tuesday to memorialize the five police officers slain during a peaceful protest last week. He abbreviated his trip to Spain, however, in response to the shooting of police officers in Dallas. He is visiting on invitation of the mayor of Dallas, the White House said. George W. Bush and his wife, Laura, will also attend, and the ex-president will deliver brief remarks.

President Barack Obama tells members of the USA military in Spain that America will overcome various threats and challenges not only through its military strength but by staying true to its values, including respect for one another and the refusal to be divided by ethnicity and religion.

Mr. Earnest said the president wants to offer his condolences to the families of the officers who were killed, as well as to "offer some comfort to people all across the country".

He said those offenders are doing a disservice to criminal justice reform.

During his visit, Obama visited USS Ross (DDG 71) as well as held an all-hands call to thank service members.

The White House would say only that they discussed Spanish and European politics, and that Obama "stressed the value of the longstanding ties between the United States and Spain, the need for efforts to stimulate growth and create jobs, and the importance of continued cooperation on shared security challenges".

Obama was supposed to spend two days in Spain, but cut the visit to about a day because of the shootings.

Five officers were killed and seven were wounded when a gunman opened fire on a protest march in downtown Dallas on Thursday evening.

Baton Rouge DA recuses himself from Alton Sterling shooting death case
Protesters have taken to the streets after two black men were shot and killed by police in Louisiana and Minnesota last week. An additional four are from cities directly neighboring Baton Rouge . "If I get close to you, you're going to jail".

He asked activists to maintain a respectful and serious tone, which will "mobilize American society to bring about real change".

But he also urged law enforcement officers to treat seriously complaints that they can be heavy-handed and intolerant, particularly toward blacks.

Obama will speak on Tuesday during an interfaith memorial service at the Morton H Meyerson Symphony Center. "Europe is central to our security, we could not have a more important alliance of friends than those of you here in Europe, and that includes a strong and unified Spain", he said. He said the process is sometimes messy and controversial, but the ability to engage in free speech has improved America.

Obama's plea for a reasoned debate came on the last day of a trip to Spain and Poland.

Obama was supposed to spend two days in Spain after attending a North Atlantic Treaty Organisation summit in Warsaw earlier this week.

Obama said the Black Lives Matter movement had grown out of a tradition that dated to the abolitionist movement, the women's suffrage campaign, and the protests against the war in Vietnam.

Obama noted the "difficult week" as he made small talk Sunday with King Felipe VI after arriving at Spain's Royal Palace for a meeting.
