Black Lives Matter protest in Madison

Renewed protests over the latest fatal shootings of black men by police took place in Dallas, Baton Rouge, Louisiana, the District of Columbia, Cincinnati, Memphis and Hampton Roads, Virginia.

But he also acknowledged that those debates are often "messy and controversial", and urged protesters to "maintain a respectful, thoughtful tone" after a week of deadly shootings - both of African-American men by police and of police officers by a Dallas gunman.

Carla Wallace is white but said she's been protesting against police brutality, especially against African-Americans for 30 years.

How do they compare with the atmosphere in Europe?

Nearly 1,000 people took part in rallies in the UK capital over the weekend, many saying they were there to show their support to black families in the United States.

"People need to know that Black Lives Matter is not a hate group, it's not some radicalized group".

Dallas Police Chief David Brown said Johnson appeared delusional, taunted police during a standoff by singing and "laughing at us" and wrote cryptic messages on a wall with his own blood.

Dallas Police on Alert After Threat Against Law Enforcement
Detroit police have arrested four men over Facebook postings that the city's police chief says amount to threats against officers. The police headquarters had been placed on lockdown and was surrounded by SWAT team vehicles, according to local media.

Traffic came to a standstill as police escorted demonstrators through the city.

Unfortunately the protest in the south London neighbourhood was marred by some unsavoury scenes, with one man being escorted away from the crowd by police after allegedly making derogatory towards the crowd. Protesters could be seen blocking roadways as they moved.

"The New Testament says in Romans 13:4 that law enforcement officers are ministers of God sent by God to punish evildoers, " he said, adding that he was "sick and exhausted of so-called ministers who do nothing but sow seeds of distrust and disrespect for the police".

"It felt like even though I didn't know anyone, we were a strong group of friends who all wanted to protect each other. It was quite remarkable".

Protesters lay down in Potsdamer Platz while the names were read out.

Louisiana Gov. John Bel Edwards, who called the press conference, said most protests had been peaceful - with most arrests for minor offenses - and blamed outside agitators for incitements to violence.

Similar marches and rallies have been held around the country in recent days, including hundreds of people who gathered at the Ohio Statehouse Saturday.
